ONE FORMULA, ONE ANSWER
Hydraulic Jump Sequent Depth Calculator
Calculate the downstream sequent depth corresponding to supercritical upstream flow in a horizontal rectangular channel using momentum conservation. Choose input units and calculate one value within the stated conditions.
Inputs
Calculations run in this browser. Scientific notation such as 1.2e-3 is supported. Do not group thousands.
Result
Sequent downstream depth y₂
Enter values and select Calculate.
Fr₁ = V₁/√(gy₁); y₂ = y₁[√(1+8Fr₁²)−1]/2
Assumptions
Required: a constant-width horizontal rectangular channel, hydrostatic pressure at both sections, and upstream Fr₁ > 1. Neglect friction and external-force contributions to the jump momentum balance. Actual jump location and stability also depend on tailwater and other conditions.
Displayed values are floating-point approximations. Design safety factors and unprovided error contributions are not calculated.
