ONE FORMULA, ONE ANSWER
ADC Quantization Noise Calculator
Calculate ideal RMS quantization error for a uniform N-bit quantizer across its full input voltage span. Choose input units and calculate one value within the stated conditions.
Inputs
Calculations run in this browser. Scientific notation such as 1.2e-3 is supported. Do not group thousands.
Result
RMS quantization error e_rms
Enter values and select Calculate.
q = V_FS/2ᴺ; e_rms = q/√12
Assumptions
Required: the full voltage span, for example 2 V for −1 V to +1 V. The ideal rounding error is uniform over −q/2 to +q/2 and uncorrelated with the signal. A constant or coherently sampled input can violate that distribution. Excluded: overload, DNL, INL and thermal noise. The output is ideal quantization error rather than the measured total noise of an ADC.
Displayed values are floating-point approximations. Design safety factors and unprovided error contributions are not calculated.
