ONE FORMULA, ONE ANSWER

Welding heat input per length calculator

Calculate the thermal energy delivered to the workpiece per weld length for constant voltage, current and travel speed. Choose input units and calculate one value within the stated conditions.

FORMULA

H = ηUI/v; 1 kJ/mm = 10⁶ J/m

Assumptions

Required: constant voltage, current and travel speed, with a process-appropriate thermal efficiency. At η=1 the result is arc energy per length before efficiency correction. For pulsed or alternating waveforms, mean voltage times mean current can differ from mean instantaneous power; this constant-parameter model is then unsuitable. Excluded: heat-affected-zone temperature, cooling rate and weld qualification.

Displayed values are floating-point approximations. Design safety factors and unprovided error contributions are not calculated.
