ONE FORMULA, ONE ANSWER

Horizontal Coriolis acceleration calculator

Compute the Coriolis acceleration component perpendicular to horizontal motion at a stated latitude. Choose input units and calculate one value within the stated conditions.

Inputs

Zero or greater

Negative, zero or positive

Enter values and select Calculate.

FORMULA

aₕ = 2 Ω v |sin φ|

Assumptions

Required: a local horizontal tangent plane on a rotating sphere and latitude from −90° to 90°. The result is the horizontal magnitude. Direction is right of motion in the northern hemisphere and left in the southern hemisphere. Excluded: vertical motion, centrifugal acceleration, and trajectory integration.

Displayed values are floating-point approximations. Design safety factors and unprovided error contributions are not calculated.
